Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Water Parks, New Jersey, has unleashed the newly refurbished Great Nor’Easter roller coaster. During the winter, the 1995 Vekoma suspended looping coaster located on Surfside Pier underwent a five-million dollar re-tracking project by the Netherlands-based manufacturer for a smoother ride. The upgraded coaster now boasts 2,170 feet (661 m) of new and improved track all wrapped up in a sleek new paint job. With a 95-foot (29 m) drop, the revamped ride has speeds to appease the biggest coaster buffs, yet gently glides for adrenaline seeking grannies.
When it came time to re-introduce the coaster, Morey’s took a unique turn. To demonstrate just how smooth the faster, smoother Great Nor’Easter is, Morey’s Piers hosted the first-ever “Granny Opening.” The coaster’s inaugural ride featured a gaggle of grandmas, and some grandpas too, led by second-generation partners Jack and Will Morey. Having no shame, Jack Morey donned a Granny wig and sported blue lipstick for the event. After the grannies give the official green light, the celebration continued with music, free rides, and refreshments.
