Budget double-up for Universal Studios’ Beijing investment

Universal Beijing Resort is bumping up the budget for the upcoming 300-acre theme park, taking the estimated total from $3.25b to $6.5b.

Initially announced in October 2014 by Universal Parks & Resorts, the park is aiming for a 2021 opening. The new surge in investment is the result of the recent success of Shanghai Disney Resort which drew over 11m visitors in 2017, and added Disney Pixar Toy Story Land in recent months.

In addition to new retail and entertainment facilities, work is underway at Universal Beijing to incorporate new zones, such as a Harry Potter themed area, and new attractions themed around Minions, Transformers, and Kung Fu Panda. Additionally, executives have confirmed that Fast and Furious – Supercharged, a new addition at Universal Studios Florida, will also be coming to Beijing.
