Unable to open in 2020 and celebrate the 100th anniversary of its famed Wonder Wheel, Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, Coney Island, New York, is now making their largest investment ever with the planned introduction of Phoenix, a Vekoma Suspended Family Coaster.
“With the year we have all had,” said park operator Dennis Vourderis, we wanted to show some good news is on the way. Coney Island, and all of New York City, needs a place where we can all come together and heal after so much heartache and division. We are hoping this is the beginning of better times ahead.”
When complete, Phoenix will be 68 feet (21 m) tall, 1,296 feet (395 m) long, and carry up to 20 guests in a ten-car train to a top speed of 34 mph (55 kph). It will rise along 12th Avenue adjacent to the Wonder Wheel.
Coney Island has a rich history of roller coasters and was critical in the ride’s development. During its heyday there were approximately 30 coasters operating there. With the announcement of Phoenix, in 2021 there will be at least seven operating, perhaps more.
