A compilation of TripAdvisor reviews has shown the best 10 theme parks in Europe with the winner potentially coming as a surprise to many.

A list of the top ten theme parks in Europe shows that would-be thrill seekers looking to get their kicks this summer do not necessarily have to leave the country, with three located in Britain.

Paultons Park, Stockeld Park and Alton Towers all make the final list, although there is no place for popular attractions such as Thorpe Park. The list compiled by TripAdvisor is based on the reviews of users, Efteling in Denmark at number ten, with reviewers drawn to the attraction thanks to English-speaking staff and “a fairytale atmosphere, natural surroundings and a wide range of thrilling and enchanting attractions”.

Legoland Turkey is ranked at number nine, whilst the home of Peppa Pig World, Paultons Park, sits at number 8. The Hampshire-based site is a popular draw for families due to the phenomenal success of Peppa Pig and the abundance of rides linked to famous landmarks in the popular children’s TV programme.

France’s historical themed theme park has been voted as the seventh best in Europe, before the next British entry saw Stockeld Park voted in at six.

The North Yorkshire tourist attraction is set on a 40-acre site and boasts enchanted forests, magical mazes, electric trains and a variety of activities, the site has expanded rapidly since opening in 2006.

Stockeld Park narrowly misses out on a place in the top five to Alton Towers, the jewel in the crown of parent company Merlin Entertainments group.

Denmark’s Tivoli Gardens made to into fourth place narrowly beaten by Germany’s Europa Park.

Disneyland Paris came second in the poll, with more than 65% of 53,000 reviewers awarding it a four- or five-star rating.

First place was awarded to Siam Park in Tenerife, which describes itself as “the best water park in the world” and was rated as four-star or more by 86% of reviewers.
