Fan event, D23, took place last week, from Anaheim, California, and with it a Disney + exclusive, D23 Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, revealing plenty for our Editors and Park World readers to sink their teeth into. So, what was announced?
Tomorrowland
During the show on the 14th, Chairman Thomas Mazloum revealed that Tomorrowland is to be “reimagined with optimism” as Disneyland Resort plans to retain the features and experiences that have made the land a favourite among guests for so many years, while introducing fresh attractions and experiences designed to inspire a new generation.
Walt Disney Imagineering is already exploring ideas for the land’s future, with concepts including new attractions, larger open areas and new ways for visitors to experience and imagine the possibilities of tomorrow. The vision is rooted in the same spirit of optimism, creativity and discovery that inspired Walt Disney when Tomorrowland first opened in 1955 as “a vista into a world of wondrous ideas…”. The transformation aims to bring that original sense of possibility back to the heart of the land, while giving Tomorrowland a fresh identity for the years ahead.
Monstroplois was revealed by Michael Hundgen, Vice President Creative and Chris Beatty, Vice President, Walt Disney Imagineering, to be opening next year with a brand new show within Monsters Inc Land:’Welcome to Monstropolis.’ The announcements came after Randy Newman’s new song of the same name, was performed onstage. This is the first song that Randy has written for a Disney theme park.
There where also construction insights into the land being shown upon the screen for the fans to see. Amusements such as the ‘Monsters University alumni club’, ‘The Scareporium’, ‘Harryhausen’s Restaurant’ and ‘Archies scare pig pizza’. were revealed.
As well as this, the new ride ‘The Door Vault Coaster’ was announced. “You are going to be lifted 40ft in the air in 4 seconds, and then launched into the vault.”
Villains Land
Another exciting release was bought on by the evil queen’s magic mirror as it unveiled itself sinisterly in the back drop, introducing Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum, who then called upon the stage, President & Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn and Executive Creative Director Caroline May from Walt Disney Imagineering .
Discussed was the land’s back story and the villains that are deviously involved. Vaughn said this was one of the most ambitious lands created: “on the scale of Star Wars: Galaxy’s edge.”
Two major attractions where mentioned. The first being a coaster, in which you encounter Maleficent herself whilst chasing through the enchanted briar around her mountain top fortress.
The second attraction announced will be under the catacombs in the evil queens palace, where the magic mirror will invite you into the mirror realm. Here an array of Disney villains will be featured, as the mirror summons them into existence.
To celebrate this announcement, Glenn Close, once again, donned her Cruella De Vil couture to surprise the fans on stage.
